If there be a 'most asked' question here at Rock Dhu, it would have to be "What does the name mean?".
My father searched for years but never found the answer to the question. In early 1999 I was in a bookshop in Ballina, NSW. I had been flying around the state marketing my book, 'Solo Around the World'. The proprietor, obviously from the Old Country, saw my address and said simply... "Ahhh, Black Rock".
So, the search was over.
"Rock Dhu" in Gallic means Black Rock, or Rock Black, back to front. My property is named after a tiny basalt outcrop off the West Coast of Scotland, with a lighthouse erected there in about 1870. An incredible number of ships were wrecked there and lives lost.
So, our long held belief that the 'Black' reference was intended to mean the colour of the rock appears to be incorrect. Rather, it referred to 'Death' from the huge loss of life.
However, there is much more to it than that. With some assistance from an artist I have obtained a web link with much more information - see "Dubh Artach" at Wikipedia.
